Before I had my two boys I was a Reception Class Teacher and I loved outdoor learning.  I thought it was a vital part of a child's learning and I still really believe this now.  Imagine my excitement therefore when we were invited to Umberslade Farm's new forest school.  It's set in a large area of woods just next to the farm with lots of little areas to explore and investigate.

Children are encouraged to explore all areas of the woods and play with whatever they are drawn to.  There was so much choice for all children.  My boys love mess so they were instantly drawn to the mud kitchen.  Wild garlic and herbs had been put out to encourage stew making.  They spent ages going back and forth to the water butt and soil to make some very interesting smelling stew!

Once the boys had made enough stew to feed everyone we continued to explore.  There were areas to make bubbles, playdough bug making, a little hut with reading books, trucks and painting.  The hour and a half flew by and we were all sad to end our session.  We will definitely be returning again to make some more mud stew!
