The Snow Queen: The Old Rep

This adaptation of the magical adventure follows the story of two friends Kai and Gerda.  Disaster strikes the friends when the Snow Queen kidnaps Kai to help rebuild her broken treasure.   It is now down to Gerda to rescue him before the Snow Queen plunges the world into an eternal winter. Gerda has some help along the way from an unlikely band of companions, who help her travel to the Kingdom of Ice to rescue her friend Kai.

This reworked version of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale was an enjoyable watch comprising catchy musical numbers, enthusiastic main characters, an inventive use of set, and of course a story that centres on the acceptance of others. Our 9 and 7 year olds, who are familiar with the original story, were able to follow the plot despite some differences. The comedy elements, mainly through the character Hader, worked well on many levels and the Snow Queen herself gave a commanding performance that although a little scary should be fine for most children. The music was a little loud and sometimes masked the ability to hear all the lyrics but perhaps I’m getting old and can’t pick things up like I used to! All in all it was a good fun Christmas production and allowed some discussions on the way home about how we treat others which can’t be a bad thing. It also inspired the following picture from my 7 year old.
