Horrible Histories Barmy Britain Two - Dick Turpin 4.jpg

Review written by Dave Close a Family Fun in Brum reviewer

Horrible Histories at the Alexandra Theatre 1st-4th December 2021

On a cold Wednesday evening myself and my two daughters (aged 11 and 9) went to watch Horrible Histories Live at the Alexandra in Birmingham. We are all big fans of the TV show so were keen to see how this translated to the stage – it is safe to say we weren’t disappointed. The characters, songs and jokes had that familiar feel that resonated well with the young and old! Although the characters were certainly historical the jokes were modern covering topics from Boris’s bumbling speech to the current Covid crisis. It was amazing how two ordinary men had the audience of all ages joining in with their ridiculous barmy chants and songs. Wherever you were sat – whether it’s the cheap seats at the back or the front seats by the stage – the experience and the historical lessons learned are just the same and just as exciting and funny. The addition of the 3D element after the interval gave another dimension to the performance and created some jump in your seat moments. Both my daughters rated it a 5* performance and laughed heartily throughout!

My favourite part was undercover Queen Elizabeth and Henry 8th (Lydia – aged 9)

It was educational in a way it is hard for education to be – funny and interesting rather than boring! (Rebecca – aged 11)
