The Lovely Bones smaller.jpg

I was 17 years old when I first read Lovely Bones.  I remember enjoying it but finding it a bit dark.  You see, I'm the kind of person who refuses to watch a certificate 18 film for fear of being terrified!  The story follows a young girl who is brutally murdered and then observes her family from heaven dealing with the aftermath and trying to find her killer.  Maybe not the best book for someone easily scared but this was such a compelling story it was hard to put down.

Fast forward 17 years and I'm sat at the Repertory Theatre waiting for the stage production of Lovely Bones to begin.  I was happily chatting to my husband when the show began in a very surprising/shocking way.  It grabbed the whole audiences attention and made us all sit on the edge of our seats.  For the next two hours I went on a roller coaster of emotions.  There were tears, shock and even laughter.  It was one of the most compelling pieces of theatre I have ever seen.  The staging was amazing, the use of music really added to the atmosphere and  the actors were top notch.

As the show came to an end and we left the theatre I began to wish I could turn back round and watch it all again because I knew I would get something different from the story.  Surely this is the mark of an excellent night out!
